Leading the FiSHing Expedition

In April 2023, six Pathology employees from across the department came together for two days of training. Many of these had never met the others in the room as they worked in different units, on different campuses, and on different shifts. But they came together with a common goal: to become FiSH! Philosophy trainers with the aim of improving the culture in the Department of Pathology. Over two days of training, these strangers became a team of motivated trainers.

Congratulations are due to Dr. Asma Nusrat, F. Peyton Rous Professor of Experimental Pathology and Director of Experimental Pathology, and Dr. Charles Parkos, Carl V. Weller Professor and Chair of Pathology, on being named 2022 American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows. The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science family of journals. The 2022 class was comprised of 505 scientists, engineers and innovators from around the world and across all disciplines.  Being selected as an AAAS Fellow is one of the most distinguished honors within the scientific community. The newly elected Fellows are being recognized for their scientific and socially notable achievements spanning their careers.

In Memoriam: Dr. Mila Blaivas 1938-2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mila Blaivas, MD, PhD. Blaivas passed away after a short illness on January 6, 2020, at a local hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she had moved to be with her daughter and son-in-law in May 2011. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Alex Blaivas, who was the love of her life, two children and three grandchildren.

New Breast Cancer Metastasis Mechanism Uncovered

The laboratory of Dr. Celina Kleer, Harold A. Oberman Collegiate Professor, isolated human mesenchymal stem cells from breast cancer metastasis. The lab discovered that a collagen receptor tyrosine kinase, DDR2, mediates stromal-cancer communication and induces breast cancer metastasis. Oberman Collegiate Professor, discovered that mammary-specific knock down of CCN6 results in mammary carcinomas with features of human metaplastic carcinomas. Congratulations to the Department of Pathology's David Manthei, MD, PhD, House Officer III, for winning the "Best Poster Award" at the 2016 ASCP Annual meeting in Las Vegas. His poster on "Predictive value of hypogammaglobulinemia in monoclonal gammopathies detected by reflex immunofixation of serum protein electrophoresis samples" presented the largest study to date on the value of reflexing hypogammaglobulinemic samples for detecting monoclonal gammopathies. Scoring for the award was based on originality, potential importance, research design or implementation and interpretations.
